Summary
Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) reveals significant clonal homogeneity among Haemophilus influenzae strains causing invasive diseases in the Czech Republic. Most strains belonged to sequence type 6 (ST-6), indicating a dominant clone.
Area of Science:
- Microbiology
- Genetics
- Epidemiology
Background:
- Haemophilus influenzae is a significant pathogen causing invasive diseases.
- Understanding the genetic diversity and population structure of H. influenzae is crucial for disease control.
Purpose of the Study:
- To present the first results of multilocus sequence typing (MLST) for Haemophilus influenzae strains isolated from invasive diseases in the Czech Republic.
- To characterize the genetic relatedness and population structure of these strains.
Main Methods:
- Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) was performed on 28 H. influenzae strains.
- Sequencing data was analyzed to determine sequence types (STs).
- Newly described STs were submitted to the global H. influenzae MLST database.
Main Results:
- MLST indicated clonal homogeneity among the studied H. influenzae strains.
- Twenty-two of 26 H. influenzae type b strains belonged to ST-6.
- Four strains represented two newly described STs (ST-83 and ST-84).
- Two non-typeable H. influenzae strains were assigned to ST-3 and a newly described ST-85.
Conclusions:
- ST-6 is a predominant sequence type among H. influenzae type b strains causing invasive diseases in the Czech Republic.
- The study identified novel sequence types, contributing to the global understanding of H. influenzae population genetics.
- These findings provide baseline data for future epidemiological surveillance and control strategies.
