Summary

Politzerization effectively reduced middle ear pressure in atelectatic ears. Room air showed a greater pressure decrease than a specialized gas mixture, possibly due to faster oxygen absorption.

Background:

  • Middle ear (ME) atelectasis can lead to impaired hearing.
  • Politzerization is a method to inflate the middle ear, aiming to restore normal pressure.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy of politzerization using room air versus a specific gas mixture (12% O2, 6% CO2, 82% N2) in managing middle ear pressure.

Main Methods:

  • Studied 13 atelectatic ears, measuring middle ear pressure via tympanometry before and after politzerization.
  • Treatments administered using room air and a prepared gas mixture via catheter inflation.

Main Results:

  • Both treatments rapidly decreased elevated middle ear pressure within 30 minutes.
  • Room air resulted in a significantly greater pressure decrease at 35 and 45 minutes compared to the gas mixture.

Conclusions:

  • Slower oxygen absorption through the middle ear mucosa may explain the reduced efficacy of the gas mixture.
