Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Anesthesiology
  • Geriatric Medicine

Background:

  • Day surgery is expanding, especially in plastic surgery.
  • Local anesthesia is frequently used for elderly patients with comorbidities.
  • No national guidelines exist for local anesthesia in day surgery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze patient selection and complication rates in local anesthetic day surgery.
  • To identify patient factors associated with increased risk.
  • To inform guidelines for patient suitability in local anesthetic day surgery.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 328 local anesthetic plastic surgical procedures.
  • Data collected over a 10-month period.
  • Complication rates were assessed based on patient demographics and surgical factors.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • 37 complications occurred in 328 procedures.
  • Two complications required inpatient admission for wound infection.
  • Increased complications were linked to male gender, elevated systolic blood pressure, and full-thickness skin grafts.

Conclusions:

  • Local anesthetic plastic surgery demonstrates a low risk profile.
  • Procedures are suitable for patients often deemed unsuitable for general anesthetic day surgery.
  • Patient selection criteria can be refined based on identified risk factors.
