Summary

Neurons in the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) signal important visual and eye movement events. This suggests a role for PCC in visual orienting and attention, especially during complex tasks.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Oculomotor research
  • Cognitive neuroscience

Background:

  • Posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) neurons show responses to eye movements and visual stimuli.
  • PCC neuronal activity appears modulated by ambient illumination and visual pattern size.
  • Behavioral context, including timing and spatial distribution of visual/oculomotor events, may influence PCC activity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the spatial and temporal response properties of single PCC neurons.
  • To test the hypothesis that PCC neuronal activity is modulated by behavioral context.
  • To understand the role of PCC in visual orienting and attention.

Main Methods:

  • Recorded single PCC neuron activity in monkeys performing saccades with unpredictable target locations and movement timings.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Utilized unsignaled delays between target onset and movement onset to dissociate neural activity.
  • Constructed response fields to analyze spatial and temporal selectivity.
  • Main Results:

    • Many PCC neurons activated by small contralateral visual targets and contraversive saccades.
    • PCC neurons maintained target selectivity during delays up to 600 ms.
    • Neuronal responsiveness decreased with divided attention; response strength correlated with saccade accuracy.

    Conclusions:

    • PCC neurons signal salient visual and oculomotor events.
    • PCC plays a role in visual orienting and attention.
    • PCC activity is modulated by behavioral context, including attention and task demands.
