Data in brief·2018

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Medicine
  • Gynecology
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Endometriosis is a common gynecological condition affecting women of reproductive age.
  • Prevalence of endometriosis may vary geographically and ethnically.
  • Diagnostic laparoscopy is a key procedure for diagnosing pelvic conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the prevalence and severity of endometriosis in infertile women from Malaysia and the United Kingdom.
  • To investigate potential ethnic differences in endometriosis presentation.

Main Methods:

  • A comparative study involving 202 infertile women in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and 464 infertile women in Aberdeen, United Kingdom.
  • Diagnostic laparoscopy was performed on all participants.
  • Pelvic findings were assessed, and endometriosis was diagnosed and staged using the AFS Classification (1985).

Main Results:

  • Endometriosis was diagnosed in 51% of women from Kuala Lumpur versus 22% from Aberdeen (p < 0.001).
  • No significant difference in the severity of endometriosis was observed between the two groups based on the AFS Classification.
  • The findings suggest a higher prevalence of endometriosis among Asian women compared to Caucasian women.

Conclusions:

  • Endometriosis is significantly more common in infertile women of Asian ethnicity compared to Caucasian ethnicity.
  • While prevalence differs, the severity of endometriosis appears consistent across these ethnic groups.
  • These results support the need for further research into ethnic variations in endometriosis epidemiology.
