Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Maternal-Fetal Medicine
  • Medical Procedures

Background:

  • Amniocentesis is a common prenatal diagnostic procedure.
  • Operator experience may influence procedural safety and complication rates.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of operator experience on amniocentesis complication incidence.
  • To compare complication rates between experienced and less experienced operators.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 1,459 amniocentesis procedures performed under ultrasound guidance.
  • Comparison of complication rates (fetal loss, fluid leakage, etc.) between procedures done by experienced (1,324 cases) and less experienced (135 cases) operators.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Amniocentesis performed by experienced operators was associated with a significant reduction in various complications.
  • Specific complications analyzed included fetal loss, blood-stained amniotic fluid, culture failure, and fetal trauma.

Conclusions:

  • Operator experience is a critical factor in minimizing complications during amniocentesis.
  • Ultrasound-guided amniocentesis by experienced practitioners enhances procedural safety and improves outcomes.
