Anorexia nervosa (AN) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) patients show impaired conditional-associative learning (CAL) with neutral words, suggesting common neurobiological roots for these conditions.

Background:

  • Anorexia nervosa (AN) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are distinct conditions with overlapping symptoms and potential shared neurobiological underpinnings.
  • Previous functional neuroimaging studies suggest commonalities in brain function between AN and OCD.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate conditional-associative learning (CAL) in individuals with AN, OCD, bulimia nervosa, and healthy controls.
  • To explore whether deficits in CAL are specific to certain patient groups or stimulus types.

Main Methods:

  • A conditional-associative learning (CAL) task was administered to 16 females diagnosed with AN, OCD, bulimia nervosa, and normal controls.
  • Participants completed assessments for age, sex, intelligence, depression, verbal memory, verbal fluency, and general neuropsychological functioning.

  • Anorexia nervosa and OCD patients exhibited impaired performance on the CAL task when using neutral verbal stimuli.
  • This learning deficit was not observed with individually threatening verbal stimuli in AN and OCD groups.
  • Individuals with bulimia nervosa and normal controls did not show any significant deficits in conditional-associative learning.

Conclusions:

  • The findings suggest that impaired conditional-associative learning with neutral material is a shared characteristic of anorexia nervosa and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
  • These results support the hypothesis of common neurobiological dysfunctions underlying AN and OCD.
  • The CAL task may serve as a functional indicator of neurophysiological dysfunction in obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders.
