Background:

  • Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disorder affecting multiple organs, primarily the lungs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • A comprehensive literature search was performed using MEDLINE, Embase, and International Pharmaceutical Abstracts databases.
  • Search terms included "cystic fibrosis," "macrolide," and "azithromycin" for articles published between 1966 and April 2004.
  • Four relevant studies involving 7-185 pediatric and adult CF patients were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • Azithromycin treatment, with dosages ranging from 250 mg thrice weekly to 500 mg daily, showed improvements in lung function.
  • Patients receiving azithromycin experienced an increase in percent predicted forced expiratory volume (FEV) of 2.95% to 6.2% compared to placebo.
