Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Vascular Surgery
  • Emergency Medicine

Background:

  • Priapism, a persistent erection, can result from vascular injury.
  • High-flow priapism is often associated with trauma, such as straddle injuries.
  • Rupture of penile arteries is a rare but serious cause of priapism.

Observation:

  • An adolescent presented with high-flow priapism following a fall astride.
  • Doppler ultrasound confirmed a ruptured deep penile artery as the cause.
  • Symptoms appeared on the third day post-accident.

Findings:

  • The condition was diagnosed as high-flow priapism secondary to deep penile artery rupture.
  • Highly selective embolization was performed as the treatment modality.
  • Successful embolization was achieved with no immediate complications.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Selective embolization is an effective treatment for high-flow priapism due to arterial injury.
  • This minimally invasive approach can preserve erectile function.
  • Prompt diagnosis and intervention are crucial for favorable outcomes in traumatic priapism.
