Abstract:
The registered 31 cases of human brucellosis in Poland comprise chronically ill professionals who in the past were involved for many years in the control of animal brucellosis. One case of acute infection was imported from Mediterranean region.
Insights
Thirty-one Polish cases of human brucellosis involved professionals with chronic illness from long-term animal brucellosis control. An additional acute infection case was linked to the Mediterranean region, highlighting occupational risks.
Area of Science:
- Veterinary medicine
- Epidemiology
- Infectious diseases
Context:
- Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease with significant public health implications.
- Occupational exposure is a known risk factor for brucellosis transmission.
- Poland has documented cases of human brucellosis among professionals involved in animal disease control.
Purpose:
- To report on registered cases of human brucellosis in Poland.
- To identify the demographic and exposure characteristics of affected individuals.
- To understand the potential sources of infection, including occupational and imported cases.
Summary:
- The study details 31 registered cases of chronic human brucellosis in Poland.
- These cases primarily involved professionals with extensive histories in animal brucellosis control.
- One acute brucellosis case was identified as imported from the Mediterranean region.
Impact:
- Highlights the persistent risk of brucellosis in individuals with prolonged occupational contact with animals.
- Underscores the importance of ongoing surveillance and control measures for zoonotic diseases in veterinary professionals.
- Suggests the need for awareness regarding travel-related risks for infectious diseases like brucellosis.
