Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the genetic association between syntaxin 1A gene polymorphisms and schizophrenia.
  • To investigate the role of syntaxin 1A in the etiology of schizophrenia.

Main Methods:

  • Case-control study design with 192 matched pairs.
  • Independent sample of 238 nuclear families.
  • Analysis of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and haplotype analysis.

Main Results:

  • Significant genetic association found between schizophrenia and an intron 7 SNP in syntaxin 1A.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Combined TDT and case-control analyses strengthened the association.
  • Haplotype analysis supported the association, driven by the intron 7 SNP.
  • Conclusions:

    • This is the first report of a genetic association between syntaxin 1A and schizophrenia.
    • Results require replication and should be interpreted with caution.
