Summary

This study assessed the reliability of motor unit action potential (MUAP) parameters in quantitative electromyography (QEMG). Size index and firing rate showed good reproducibility, supporting their use in longitudinal QEMG studies.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Neurophysiology

Background:

  • Quantitative electromyography (QEMG) is crucial for diagnosing neuromuscular disorders.
  • Test-retest reliability of multi-motor unit action potential (MUAP) parameters is not well-established for needle QEMG by the same examiner.
  • Establishing reproducibility is essential for using QEMG in longitudinal patient monitoring and research.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the test-retest reliability of multi-MUAP analysis parameters in needle QEMG.
  • To determine the reproducibility of specific MUAP parameters over short (same-day) and longer (4-10 days) intervals.
  • To identify which MUAP parameters are most reliable for follow-up assessments.

Main Methods:

  • Needle quantitative electromyography (QEMG) was performed on 21 individuals.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Repeat QEMG examinations were conducted on 14 individuals within 3 hours (same-day) and on 7 individuals after 4-10 days (different-day).
  • Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was calculated to assess the reproducibility of MUAP parameters.
  • Main Results:

    • Same-day QEMG showed high reproducibility with ICCs ranging from 87% to 97%.
    • Different-day QEMG demonstrated moderate reproducibility with ICCs ranging from 52% to 81%.
    • Motor unit action potential (MUAP) size index and firing rate exhibited the highest reproducibility across both testing intervals.

    Conclusions:

    • Motor unit action potential (MUAP) parameters, particularly size index and firing rate, demonstrate good to excellent test-retest reliability in needle QEMG.
    • These findings support the use of multi-MUAP analysis with a focus on size index and firing rate for longitudinal monitoring in clinical practice and research.
    • Further studies may refine protocols to optimize reproducibility for different QEMG parameters over extended periods.
