Summary

The incidence of male breast carcinoma is rising, with men diagnosed at older ages and more advanced stages. Survival rates are similar between sexes when adjusted for disease stage.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Epidemiology
  • Cancer Research

Background:

  • Male breast carcinoma is rare, with limited data from small studies.
  • Previous research has not fully elucidated incidence, characteristics, or survival.
  • Understanding male breast cancer is crucial for comparative analysis with female breast cancer.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence and trends of male breast carcinoma.
  • To compare clinical and demographic characteristics between male and female breast cancer patients.
  • To identify prognostic factors and survival rates for male breast carcinoma.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized the National Cancer Institute Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database (1973-1998).
  • Calculated age-adjusted incidence rates and compared patient/tumor characteristics.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Performed univariate and multivariate analyses to assess survival predictors.
  • Main Results:

    • Incidence of male breast carcinoma increased significantly (0.86 to 1.08 per 100,000).
    • Men were diagnosed at older ages, with more lymph node involvement, advanced stage, and hormone receptor-positive tumors.
    • Larger tumor size and lymph node involvement were linked to poorer survival in men.

    Conclusions:

    • Male breast carcinoma incidence is increasing, though it remains uncommon.
    • Epidemiologic and biologic differences exist between male and female breast cancers.
    • Survival rates by stage are comparable between men and women.
