Summary

This study on uncemented total hip replacement found good clinical outcomes and radiological stability after 3 years. Femoral bone mineral density loss was lower than in comparable studies, suggesting improved bone preservation.

Background:

  • Uncemented total hip replacement is a common procedure.
  • Assessing periprosthetic bone mineral density (BMD) is crucial for long-term implant survival.
  • Previous studies have indicated significant bone loss around uncemented femoral stems.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate femoral periprosthetic bone mineral density (BMD) in patients undergoing uncemented total hip replacement.
  • To assess the clinical and radiological outcomes at a minimum 3-year follow-up.
  • To compare the observed BMD changes with existing literature.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective follow-up of 24 patients (26 hips) with uncemented total hip replacement.
  • Quantitative computed tomography osteodensitometry used to measure femoral periprosthetic BMD.
