A rare bone relapse of T cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) occurred in a child

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Oncology
  • Hematology
  • Leukemia Research

Background:

  • Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a common childhood cancer.
  • Relapse can occur in extramedullary sites, but bone relapse is infrequent.

Observation:

  • A 6.5-year-old boy with T cell ALL presented with tibial swelling 7 months post-chemotherapy.
  • Bone marrow and cerebrospinal fluid showed no evidence of leukemia.

Findings:

  • The tibial swelling was confirmed to be infiltrated with lymphoblasts, indicating an isolated bone relapse.
  • This represents the first documented case of bone relapse in ALL from India.

Implications:

  • Highlights the possibility of isolated bone relapse in ALL even after negative systemic evaluations.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Emphasizes the need for vigilance in detecting extramedullary relapse in pediatric leukemia.
  • Contributes to the understanding of rare ALL relapse patterns.
