Summary

Most pediatric cancers (PC) are linked to unknown environmental risk factors (RF). This project aims to identify these RFs to develop preventive strategies and improve understanding of PC etiopathogenesis.

Area of Science:

  • Environmental Health
  • Pediatric Oncology
  • Epidemiology

Context:

  • Pediatric cancers (PC) are multifactorial, resulting from a combination of endogenous and environmental factors.
  • A significant majority (85-96%) of PC cases are suspected to be associated with environmental risk factors (RF), many of which remain unidentified.
  • Current medical records primarily focus on cancer diagnosis and treatment, lacking comprehensive data on environmental RFs.

Purpose:

  • To analyze current knowledge on the interaction of environmental RFs in the etiopathogenesis of PC.
  • To introduce the "Environment and Pediatric Cancer" research project to pediatricians.
  • To document the presence or absence of endogenous and exogenous RFs associated with PC.

Summary:

  • The project will determine the frequency of endogenous and exogenous RFs associated with PC in Spain.

Related Experiment Videos

  • It will utilize a Pediatric Environmental Medical Record to document identified RFs and major human carcinogens.
  • This initiative aims to generate hypotheses for future epidemiological studies in Spain and Europe.
  • Impact:

    • Facilitate the formulation of hypotheses for future epidemiological studies.
    • Stimulate the development of educational and preventive policies for the Spanish population.
    • Enhance understanding of RFs linked to PC, contributing to medium and long-term prevention efforts.
