Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between maternal cocaine ingestion and the development of single ventricle heart defects.
  • To analyze trends in single ventricle prevalence over time.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study was conducted using data from the Atlanta Birth Defects Case-Control Study and the Metropolitan Atlanta Congenital Defects Program (MACDP).
  • Infants with single ventricle were compared to control infants, matched for race, hospital, and birth quarter.
  • Prevalence trends of single ventricle were analyzed using MACDP data from 1968-1990.

Main Results:

  • None of the 27 infants with single ventricle in the case-control study reported cocaine exposure during early pregnancy.
  • A small percentage (0.43%) of control infants reported early pregnancy cocaine exposure.
  • Analysis of MACDP data revealed no upward trend in single ventricle prevalence between 1968 and 1990.

Conclusions:

  • The study's findings do not support a significant causal link between maternal cocaine ingestion and single ventricle heart defects.
