Summary

A rare case of thyroid tissue found in the pelvis, identified as a monodermal extragonadal teratoma, is presented. Surgical removal is recommended due to potential malignancy in these thyroid teratomas.

Background:

Observation:

  • A case report details a well-encapsulated thyroid tissue mass localized to the pelvis.
  • This pelvic thyroid tissue was distinct from the ovaries and interpreted as a monodermal extragonadal teratoma.

Findings:

  • The differential diagnosis for unusual pelvic thyroid tissue includes ectopia, metastasis from occult thyroid carcinoma, and teratoma.
  • Histological confirmation identified the pelvic mass as a teratoma containing thyroid tissue.

Implications:

  • Teratomas of teratoid origin, especially those containing thyroid tissue, carry malignant potential.
  • Surgical excision is advised for pelvic teratomas with thyroid tissue to mitigate risks of malignant transformation.
