Summary

A rare retroperitoneal xanthogranuloma caused ureteral stricture and flank pain in a 51-year-old man. Surgical resection and ureteral reconstruction successfully treated the condition with no recurrence.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Pathology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Retroperitoneal xanthogranulomas are rare benign tumors.
  • Ureteral strictures can lead to hydronephrosis and flank pain.

Observation:

  • A 51-year-old man presented with right flank pain and hydronephrosis.
  • Imaging revealed a paraureteric mass causing ureteral stricture.
  • Ureteroscopy showed no mucosal lesions.

Findings:

  • Histopathological diagnosis confirmed retroperitoneal xanthogranuloma.
  • The mass adhered to the right ureter, causing stricture.
  • Surgical resection and uretero-ureterostomy were performed.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of considering rare retroperitoneal masses in the differential diagnosis of ureteral strictures.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Successful surgical management of retroperitoneal xanthogranuloma can lead to good patient outcomes.
  • Further research into the etiology and optimal management of these rare tumors is warranted.
