Summary

Preoperative autologous blood donation (PABD) is effective in spine surgery, with 80% of patients avoiding allogeneic blood transfusions (ABT). PABD is more successful in fusions than scoliosis, and recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO) can improve outcomes for anemic patients.
