Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Neurology
  • Infectious Diseases in Animals

Background:

  • Tetanus, caused by Clostridium bacteria, can manifest in cats following injuries.
  • This study investigates clinical signs, diagnosis, and treatment outcomes for feline tetanus.

Observation:

  • Three cats presented with spasticity (muscle stiffness) in one or all limbs, indicative of tetanus.
  • Clinical signs appeared 2 days to 3 weeks post-injury, with evidence of Clostridium infection at injury sites.
  • Electromyography (EMG) in one cat showed abnormal motor unit potentials in the affected leg.

Findings:

  • All cats received antibiotics (Penicillin, Amoxicillin/Clavulanic acid, Metronidazole) and supportive care, including wound revision and nutritional support.
  • Physiotherapy was initiated in a second phase of treatment.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Significant improvement was observed in all cats within weeks, with two cats becoming symptom-free.
  • Implications:

    • Early diagnosis and aggressive treatment, including antibiotics and physiotherapy, are crucial for feline tetanus recovery.
    • This case series highlights the successful management of tetanus in cats, improving prognosis.
    • Further research into feline tetanus could refine treatment protocols and preventative strategies.
