Summary

This study reveals that tapping abdominal muscles triggers reflex responses in both the same and opposite sides of the body. These reflexes suggest shared neural pathways for abdominal muscle activation across the body.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate both homonymous and heteronymous reflex connections in abdominal muscles.
  • To determine if reflex pathways are shared between ipsilateral and contralateral muscles.

Main Methods:

  • Surface electromyography (sEMG) was used to record muscle responses.
  • Taps were applied to the muscle belly of rectus abdominis (RA), external oblique (EO), and internal oblique (IO) muscles.
  • Reflex responses were analyzed for latency and conduction velocity on both ipsilateral and contralateral sides.

  • Homonymous reflexes in abdominal muscles showed characteristics of Ia afferent activation with a monosynaptic component.
  • Short-latency heteronymous excitatory reflexes were observed on both ipsilateral and contralateral sides.
  • Contralateral reflex latencies were only slightly longer than ipsilateral ones, with comparable amplitudes.

Conclusions:

  • Abdominal muscle afferents activate similar neural pathways to muscles on both sides of the body.
  • The findings suggest that monosynaptic pathways may activate synergistic motoneurons contralaterally, in addition to ipsilaterally.
  • This provides new insights into the bilateral neural control of trunk muscles.
