Area of Science:

  • Organometallic Chemistry
  • Crystallography

Background:

  • 2,2'-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1'-binaphthyl (BINAP) is a crucial chiral ligand in asymmetric catalysis.
  • Oxidation of phosphine ligands can alter their coordination properties and catalytic activity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To synthesize BINAP oxide through direct oxidation of BINAP.
  • To characterize the resulting BINAP oxide using crystallographic methods.

Main Methods:

  • Direct oxidation of (R)-(+)-2,2'-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1'-binaphthyl (BINAP) using tert-butyl hydroperoxide in toluene.
  • Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of the synthesized BINAP oxide.

Main Results:

  • Successful synthesis of BINAP oxide, C(44)H(32)O(2)P(2).
