Area of Science:

  • Materials Science
  • Crystallography
  • Supramolecular Chemistry

Background:

  • Twin mesogens are molecules with multiple mesogenic units.
  • Understanding their structure is key to designing advanced liquid crystal phases.
  • Bis(4,4"-decyloxy-p-terphenyl-2 omino-ylmethyl) carbonate represents a new class of twin mesogens.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To elucidate the crystal structure of bis(4,4"-decyloxy-p-terphenyl-2 omino-ylmethyl) carbonate.
  • To investigate the molecular arrangement and packing in the solid state.
  • To determine if the observed structure is a precursor to a liquid crystalline phase.

Main Methods:

  • Single-crystal X-ray diffraction at 123 K.
  • Analysis of molecular conformation and intermolecular interactions.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Examination of crystal packing along the crystallographic a axis.
  • Main Results:

    • The crystal structure of bis(4,4"-decyloxy-p-terphenyl-2 omino-ylmethyl) carbonate (C(79)H(110)O(7)) was determined.
    • No two adjacent aromatic rings within the molecule are coplanar.
    • The four decyloxy side chains exhibit maximal extension, and molecules pack along the crystallographic a axis.

    Conclusions:

    • The determined structure represents a new type of twin mesogen.
    • The specific molecular arrangement and packing are indicative of a precursor state for a smectic A liquid crystal phase.
    • This finding contributes to the understanding of structure-property relationships in mesogenic compounds.
