Area of Science:

  • Pharmacology
  • Nephrology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Telithromycin is a widely prescribed ketolide antibiotic for community-acquired respiratory infections.
  • Adverse events are typically gastrointestinal and mild.

Observation:

  • A case of severe acute interstitial nephritis linked to telithromycin use is reported.

Findings:

  • Telithromycin can induce severe acute interstitial nephritis, a form of drug-induced acute renal failure.

Implications:

  • Clinicians must be vigilant for potential telithromycin-induced nephrotoxicity.
  • This finding expands the known adverse event profile of telithromycin.
  • Awareness is crucial for prompt diagnosis and management of renal complications.
