Summary

Current research indicates that vitamin C supplementation does not significantly improve asthma outcomes. More large-scale, high-quality trials are needed to determine if vitamin C is effective for treating asthma, especially in children.

Area of Science:

  • Pulmonology
  • Nutritional Science
  • Clinical Trials

Background:

  • Vitamin C, a key antioxidant, is present in lung extracellular fluid.
  • Low vitamin C intake is linked to impaired lung function.
  • Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition affecting lung function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the effectiveness of vitamin C in treating asthma.
  • To review evidence from randomized controlled trials on vitamin C for asthma.

Main Methods:

  • Searched Cochrane Airways Review Group asthma register and bibliographies.
  • Included only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating vitamin C for asthma treatment.
  • Two independent reviewers selected studies and extracted data.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Eight RCTs met inclusion criteria; four provided analyzable data.
  • No significant effect of vitamin C on asthma outcomes was observed in individual studies.
  • A large 2004 study excluded significant benefit of vitamin C when added to inhaled corticosteroids.

Conclusions:

  • Insufficient evidence from RCTs supports vitamin C for asthma treatment.
  • Further large-scale, methodologically sound RCTs are necessary.
  • The efficacy of vitamin C in pediatric asthma warrants further investigation.
