Maintaining healthy tissues around dental implants requires effective supportive therapy. Current evidence is limited, with no superiority found for powered toothbrushes over manual ones, but some support for Listerine mouthwash in reducing plaque and bleeding.

Area of Science:

  • Dental Implantology
  • Periodontology
  • Preventive Dentistry

Background:

  • Maintaining healthy peri-implant tissues is crucial for long-term dental implant success.
  • Various supportive therapy regimens exist, but their comparative effectiveness remains unclear.
  • This review addresses the need for evidence-based recommendations for implant maintenance.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of different interventions for maintaining healthy peri-implant tissues.
  • To test the null hypothesis of no difference between various implant maintenance strategies.

Main Methods:

  • Comprehensive search of multiple databases (Cochrane, MEDLINE, EMBASE) and handsearching of journals.
  • Inclusion of all randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing interventions for peri-implant tissue health.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Duplicate quality assessment and data extraction, adhering to Cochrane guidelines.
  • Main Results:

    • Five RCTs involving 127 patients were included.
    • No significant difference was found between manual, powered, or sonic toothbrushes.
    • Listerine mouthwash showed a reduction in plaque and bleeding; subgingival chlorhexidine irrigation was more effective than mouthwash at suboptimal dosage; etching gel offered no advantage over mechanical debridement.

    Conclusions:

    • Limited reliable evidence exists for optimal peri-implant tissue maintenance interventions.
    • Weak evidence supports Listerine mouthwash as an adjunct for plaque and bleeding reduction.
    • Further high-quality, long-term RCTs are needed to establish effective maintenance regimens.
