Pneumothorax after cardiac surgery is rare but can be serious. Early chest tube drainage is often effective, but patients with COPD may face longer recovery and need further procedures.

Background:

  • Pneumothorax is an uncommon complication following cardiac surgery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze causative factors of pneumothorax after cardiac surgery.
  • To develop guidelines for prevention and management of this complication.

  • Retrospective analysis of adult cardiac surgical procedures over nine years.
  • Evaluation of patient data to identify risk factors and outcomes.

  • Overall incidence of postoperative pneumothorax was 1.4% (21 of 1463 patients).
  • Seven patients had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
  • Eighteen patients required chest tube insertion; four needed further interventions, including thoracotomy for one patient.

Conclusions:

  • Pneumothorax post-cardiac surgery is often preventable and can cause prolonged illness.
  • Conservative management with chest tube drainage is typically successful.
  • Patients with COPD have a higher risk of prolonged morbidity and may require more invasive treatment.
