Background:

  • T-cell immunoglobulin domain and mucin domain (TIM) proteins, including Tim-3 (T cell immunoglobulin mucin 3), are expressed on T cells.
  • Tim-3 is selectively expressed on differentiated Th1 cells and may play a role in autoimmune diseases by regulating macrophage activation and Th1 responses.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify variation sites within the coding and promoter regions of the human Tim-3 gene.
  • To investigate potential genetic differences in Tim-3 associated with asthma and allergic rhinitis.

Main Methods:

  • Direct sequencing was used to scan for variations.
  • Genomic DNA was isolated from patients with asthma or allergic rhinitis and healthy controls.

Main Results:

  • Four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified in the human Tim-3 gene.
