Abstract:
We report a case of renal and perinephretic abscesses due to Torulopsis glabrata, in a diabetic women. Fungal obstruction of upper urinary tract was associated. One must maintain a high suspicion for fungal infection when suppurative renal process occurs in a diabetic patient, especially when obstruction and absence of bacteria are noted.
Insights
A rare fungal infection caused renal and perinephretic abscesses in a diabetic woman. High suspicion for fungal pathogens is crucial in diabetic patients with unexplained kidney infections, especially with urinary tract obstruction.
Area of Science:
- Nephrology
- Mycology
- Infectious Diseases
Background:
- Renal and perinephretic abscesses are serious bacterial infections.
- Fungal infections are less common causes of renal abscesses, particularly in immunocompromised individuals.
Observation:
- A case of renal and perinephretic abscesses caused by Torulopsis glabrata (Candida glabrata) in a diabetic woman is presented.
- The patient also experienced fungal obstruction of the upper urinary tract.
Findings:
- Torulopsis glabrata can cause severe renal and perinephretic abscesses.
- Fungal urinary tract obstruction can occur concurrently with renal abscesses.
Implications:
- Diabetic patients with suppurative renal processes, particularly those with urinary tract obstruction and negative bacterial cultures, should be evaluated for fungal infections.
- Early diagnosis and treatment of fungal renal abscesses are critical to prevent complications.

Disorders of the Urinary System
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common urinary system disorders. They are caused by bacteria that enter the urethra and can spread to the bladder resulting in cystitis. Pyelonephritis is the result of a UTI that has ascended to the level of the...
