Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Women's Health
  • Medical Device Development

Background:

  • The prevalence, severity, and risk factors of fecal incontinence (FI) in community-dwelling women are not well understood.
  • Accurate assessment tools are needed to characterize FI in women.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a self-report questionnaire, the Faecal Incontinence and Constipation Assessment (FICA), for assessing FI in women.
  • To evaluate the FICA's reproducibility and concurrent validity against clinical assessments.

Main Methods:

  • Eighty-three women completed the FICA. Test-retest reproducibility was assessed in 20 women after 6 weeks.
  • Concurrent validity was evaluated by comparing FICA self-reports with a gastroenterologist's clinical assessment for all 83 subjects.

Related Experiment Videos

  • FI severity was rated using frequency, type, urgency, and use of sanitary devices.
  • Main Results:

    • The FICA questionnaire was well-understood by participants.
    • Acceptable reproducibility (median kappa: 0.80) and concurrent validity (kappa: 0.59) were demonstrated for the FICA.
    • The index question for FI showed high reproducibility (kappa: 0.90) and concurrent validity (kappa: 0.95).

    Conclusions:

    • The Faecal Incontinence and Constipation Assessment demonstrates excellent reproducibility and reasonable validity.
    • The FICA is a reliable tool for assessing the presence, risk factors, and severity of fecal incontinence in women.
    • This validated questionnaire aids in understanding associated bowel disorders in women.
