Gallbladder cancer is rare but aggressive, often missed during routine gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy). Early detection is crucial for better patient outcomes in gallbladder lithiasis cases.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology and Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • Cholecystectomy is a common procedure for gall bladder lithiasis.
  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy accounts for 50% of procedures.

Observation:

  • Four cases (0.4%) of incidental gall bladder carcinoma, stage III, were diagnosed post-pathological examination.
  • No pre-operative or operative signs suggested malignancy in these cases.

Findings:

  • All diagnosed patients were female.
  • Rapid postoperative progression of gall bladder neoplasia was observed.
  • Patients were readmitted within 31 days with jaundice, tumoral mass, and liver metastasis.

Implications:

  • Highlights the importance of pathological examination of gall bladder specimens.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Suggests a need for increased vigilance for incidental gall bladder cancer during cholecystectomy.
  • Exploratory laparotomies were the only feasible reintervention due to rapid disease progression.
