Area of Science:

  • Evolutionary biology
  • Quantitative genetics

Background:

  • Negative genetic correlations between traits are often interpreted as evolutionary tradeoffs.
  • These correlations can influence the evolutionary trajectories of populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review experimental evidence on shifts in genetic correlations across environments.
  • To assess the impact of environmental variation on genetic covariation.

Main Methods:

  • Focus on experimental studies examining genetic correlations in multiple environments.
  • Synthesize findings on the plasticity of genetic correlations.

Main Results:

  • Significant changes in genetic correlations are frequently observed across environments.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Genetic correlations can even reverse their sign depending on environmental conditions.
  • Conclusions:

    • Deducing genetic constraints from single-environment studies may be unreliable.
    • The interaction between environment and genetic covariation is crucial for evolutionary studies.
