Recurrent late-onset uveitis following cataract surgery with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is often presumed to be infectious. However, this study found that noninfective causes can lead to similar symptoms, resolving with medical treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Medical Microbiology

Background:

  • Recurrent late-onset uveitis following cataract surgery is typically attributed to indolent intraocular infection.
  • Phacoemulsification with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is a common surgical procedure for cataracts.

Observation:

  • Fifteen cases of recurrent late-onset uveitis were observed after uncomplicated phacoemulsification with in-the-bag IOL implantation.
  • These cases presented with symptoms mimicking infectious uveitis.

Findings:

  • The observed cases of uveitis were determined to be noninfective in origin.
  • Medical treatment resulted in good visual recovery for all fifteen patients.

Implications:

  • This challenges the assumption that all recurrent late-onset uveitis post-IOL is infectious.

Related Experiment Videos

  • It highlights the importance of considering noninfective etiologies and prompt medical management for such cases.
  • This may lead to revised diagnostic and treatment protocols for post-cataract surgery uveitis.
