Summary

Dystonia, a type of involuntary movement, can be a rare symptom of multiple sclerosis (MS). This study observed two cases, suggesting a potential link between dystonic movements and MS progression.

Background:

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease affecting the central nervous system.
  • Involuntary movements, such as dystonia, are not commonly reported in MS patients.

Observation:

  • Two patients with a long-standing history of multiple sclerosis presented with segmental dystonia.
  • These involuntary movements were characterized as focal, sustained muscle contractions causing abnormal postures.

Findings:

  • The observed cases suggest a potential association between dystonia and multiple sclerosis.
  • While rare, dystonic involuntary movements may indicate underlying MS pathology.

Implications:

  • Dystonia could be an underrecognized neurological sign in patients with multiple sclerosis.
