This case report highlights a rare cerebellopontine angle (CPA) lipoma diagnosed using magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. These fatty tumors are often congenital developmental disorders, not true neoplasms.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Radiology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Intracranial lipomas are rare tumors, with cerebellopontine angle (CPA) lipomas accounting for only 0.05% of all intracranial tumors.
  • CPA lipomas are often considered congenital developmental anomalies rather than true neoplasms.

Observation:

  • A 38-year-old female presented with hypoacusis, leading to the diagnosis of a CPA lipoma.
  • Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging revealed a T1 hyperintense lesion in the right CPA, consistent with a fatty tumor, which did not enhance with contrast.

Findings:

  • MR imaging is crucial for diagnosing CPA lipomas, showing characteristic T1 hyperintensity and lack of contrast enhancement.
  • The diagnostic approach for CPA lipomas relies heavily on the interpretation of MR imaging findings.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Understanding the imaging characteristics of CPA lipomas is essential for accurate diagnosis and appropriate management.
  • Differentiating CPA lipomas from other CPA masses through advanced imaging techniques like MRI aids in surgical planning and patient care.
