Summary

Carotid artery aneurysms, though rare, can cause significant epistaxis (nosebleeds). This case highlights a nontraumatic cavernous internal carotid artery aneurysm presenting as recurrent nosebleeds, successfully treated with coil embolization.

Background:

  • Carotid artery aneurysms are an uncommon cause of epistaxis.
  • Nontraumatic cavernous internal carotid artery aneurysms typically present with mass effect, not hemorrhage.

Observation:

  • A 73-year-old woman presented with a month of recurrent epistaxis.
  • Imaging revealed a right cavernous internal carotid artery aneurysm.

Findings:

  • Successful coil embolization of the aneurysm was performed.
  • The patient experienced resolution of epistaxis and remained neurologically intact post-procedure.

Implications:

  • Carotid artery aneurysms should be considered in the differential diagnosis of severe epistaxis.
