Background:

  • Abnormalities in calcium and magnesium metabolism are recognized risk factors for QT interval prolongation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between eclampsia and QT interval abnormalities.
  • To determine if eclampsia is characterized by specific electrocardiographic findings.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study compared 30 intrapartum eclamptic women with 30 matched controls with uncomplicated pregnancies.
  • Measurements included QT interval corrected for heart rate (QTc), serum calcium, magnesium, and potassium levels.

Main Results:

  • Eclamptic patients exhibited significantly higher heart rates and prolonged QTc intervals compared to controls.
  • A higher frequency of abnormal QTc (46.7% vs. 6.6%) and sinus tachycardia was observed in eclamptics.
  • Eclamptic women had significantly lower serum calcium levels and a higher incidence of hypocalcemia.

Conclusions:

  • Eclampsia is associated with abnormal QTc intervals, possibly linked to maternal hypocalcemia.
  • Correcting electrolyte abnormalities and exercising caution with QT-prolonging agents are vital in eclampsia management.
