Summary

Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) implantation is a safe procedure for complicated glaucoma when other surgeries fail. This study shows AGV effectively regulates intraocular pressure in most patients, comparable to other implants.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Glaucoma Surgery
  • Medical Devices

Background:

  • Complicated glaucoma often requires aqueous shunts when filtration surgery is ineffective.
  • Valved aqueous shunts, like the Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV), mitigate hypotony risks.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) implantation in managing complicated glaucoma.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective case control study included 28 patients with complicated glaucoma.
  • Clinical examinations and ultrasound assessments of the filtering area were performed.

Main Results:

  • Mean follow-up was 25 months; 82.1% of patients achieved regulated intraocular pressure (IOP).
  • Early postoperative IOP was 6.3 mmHg, with transient hypotony and choroidal detachment in some cases.

Related Experiment Videos

  • No correlation was found between IOP regulation and filtering bleb size or digital pressure response.
  • Conclusions:

    • Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) implantation is a viable and safe option for complicated glaucoma, especially with high risk of conjunctival scarring.
    • Success rates are comparable to other glaucoma implants, offering an alternative when traditional methods fail.
