Summary

Partial nephrectomy (PN) for kidney cancer offers comparable cancer control and survival rates to radical nephrectomy (RN), with better preservation of renal function. PN is a safe and effective treatment option for renal cell carcinoma.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Oncology
  • Nephrology

Background:

  • Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a common malignancy.
  • Partial nephrectomy (PN) and radical nephrectomy (RN) are surgical options for localized RCC.
  • The comparative outcomes of PN versus RN, particularly regarding renal function and oncological control, require ongoing evaluation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare perioperative complications, disease-free survival, and renal function changes between partial nephrectomy (PN) and radical nephrectomy (RN) for localized renal cell carcinoma (RCC).
  • To assess the oncological efficacy and safety of PN as a nephron-sparing alternative to RN.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 54 patients who underwent PN for primary RCC (1992-2001).
  • Comparison group: 51 patients with clinical stage T1a localized RCC who underwent open RN during the same period.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Evaluation of complications, 5-year disease-free survival, and changes in renal function.
  • Main Results:

    • No significant difference in pathological findings or overall clinical outcomes between PN and RN groups, except for intraoperative bleeding.
    • Five-year disease-free survival rates were 90% for PN and 97% for RN; no local recurrence was observed in the PN group.
    • All PN patients maintained stable renal function, while 2 RN patients experienced slow deterioration.

    Conclusions:

    • Partial nephrectomy provides comparable cancer control and survival rates to radical nephrectomy for localized renal cell carcinoma.
    • Partial nephrectomy demonstrates a significant advantage in preserving renal function compared to radical nephrectomy.
    • PN is a safe and effective treatment option for localized RCC, offering oncological benefits with improved renal function preservation.
