Summary

Adolescent substance use, including alcohol and cannabis, is prevalent in secondary schools, with males initiating use earlier. Urgent interventions are needed to address this growing problem.

  • A self-administered questionnaire with 117 items was used to screen 1,049 students from four secondary schools.

  • 87% of students reported using at least one substance; alcohol (65%), kolanut (63.1%), and cigarettes (61%) were most common.
