Area of Science:

  • Psycholinguistics
  • Computational Linguistics
  • Cognitive Science

Background:

  • Morphological processing involves type- and token-based effects.
  • Existing measures may not fully capture word complexity.
  • Understanding word complexity is crucial for psycholinguistic models.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce an information-theoretical formulation for morphological processing.
  • To define a probabilistic measure of informational complexity: the information residual.
  • To evaluate the predictive power of the information residual against traditional measures.

Main Methods:

  • Developed an information-theoretical framework for word complexity.
  • Calculated the information residual based on word information and paradigm information.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Re-analyzed existing data on Dutch words using visual lexical decision tasks.
  • Main Results:

    • The information residual significantly outperforms traditional token- and type-based counts.
    • Information residual better predicts response latencies in visual lexical decision.
    • This measure offers a parsimonious account of various morphological processes.

    Conclusions:

    • Information residual provides a more accurate and unified account of morphological effects.
    • This novel measure enhances our understanding of word recognition and processing.
    • The information-theoretical approach offers a powerful tool for psycholinguistic research.
