The anterior transcallosal approach safely and effectively treats third ventricular colloid cysts, with complete excision and no recurrences observed in a long-term study.

Background:

Colloid cysts of the third ventricle are rare intracranial tumors.
These cysts can cause obstructive hydrocephalus and neurological deficits.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the efficacy and safety of the anterior transcallosal approach for colloid cyst removal.
To assess long-term outcomes and recurrence rates.

Main Methods:

Retrospective analysis of 19 patients operated on between 1986 and 2003.
All patients underwent an anterior transcallosal approach for cyst excision.
Follow-up ranged from 1 month to 13 years.

Main Results:

Complete excision of colloid cysts was achieved in all cases.

No recent memory loss was detected postoperatively.

One patient experienced temporary visual worsening, one required a shunt, and one had a seizure; no recurrences were observed.

Conclusions:

The anterior transcallosal approach is a safe and effective surgical method for treating third ventricular colloid cysts.
This approach offers a low risk of complications and no recurrence in the long term.
