Background:

  • Prescription anorectic drugs demonstrated significant weight loss compared to placebo in 1973.
  • Phenylpropanolamine (PPA) and PPA with caffeine showed efficacy in 1985, but PPA's effectiveness has since decreased.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of nonprescription anorectic drugs, specifically PPA and benzocaine, for weight loss.
  • To compare the weight loss effects of PPA, benzocaine, and their combination against placebo.

  • Analysis of combined parallel double-blind studies of prescription anorectic drugs.
  • Review of combined studies involving PPA and PPA with caffeine.
  • A 40-patient study comparing PPA, benzocaine, and their combination.
