Background:

  • Understanding differential cognitive changes is crucial for PD patient care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate differential cognitive decline in Parkinson's disease patients.
  • To assess changes in fluid intelligence, crystallized intelligence, memory, and metacognition.

Main Methods:

  • 116 participants (58 with PD, 58 controls) were assessed.
  • Tests included Raven's Colored Progressive Matrices (CPM) for fluid intelligence, Crichton Vocabulary Scale (CVS) for crystallized intelligence, Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) memory subtests, and Mini-mental Status Examination (MMSE).
  • Metamemory and metacognition were evaluated through participant and caregiver questionnaires.

Main Results:

  • PD patients scored lower than controls on all measures.
  • Significant differences were observed in fluid intelligence (CPM) and global cognitive screening (MMSE).

Conclusions:

  • Parkinson's disease is associated with more pronounced deficits in fluid intelligence than crystallized intelligence.
  • Patients with PD appear to maintain relatively accurate metamemory and metacognition.
