Nephrotic Syndrome I : Introduction01:24

Nephrotic Syndrome I : Introduction

546
Nephrotic Syndrome is a chronic kidney disorder defined by clinical findings such as severe proteinuria, hypoalbuminemia, hyperlipidemia, and edema. These symptoms result from damage to the glomeruli, the kidney’s filtering units, increasing their permeability to proteins.Definition and Meaning:Proteinuria, defined as the loss of more than 3.5 grams of protein per day in adults, is a crucial feature of nephrotic syndrome. This condition is often accompanied by edema, the accumulation of...

Acute Coronary Syndrome I: Introduction

912
Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) encompasses a spectrum of heart conditions caused by sudden obstruction of coronary arteries, typically resulting from the rupture of an atherosclerotic plaque and subsequent thrombus (blood clot) formation. This obstruction can lead to partial or complete blockage of blood flow, causing varying degrees of myocardial ischemia or infarction.ACS includes the following clinical entities:Unstable Angina (UA)Non-ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (NSTEMI)ST-Elevation...

Coordinates and Map Projections01:29

Coordinates and Map Projections

600
Coordinates and map projections are essential tools in accurately representing the Earth's surface for various applications, ranging from navigation to spatial analysis. The latitude and longitude coordinate system is a universally recognized framework for defining locations. Latitude specifies the distance of a point north or south of the equator, measured in degrees from 0° at the equator to 90° at the poles. Longitude indicates a location's position east or west of the prime meridian,...

Plotting of Topographic Maps01:29

Plotting of Topographic Maps

494
Topographic maps represent the Earth's surface features using contour lines, which connect points of equal elevation to create a two-dimensional representation of three-dimensional terrain. Creating a topographic map requires a systematic approach.Begin by plotting a scaled grid and marking intersections corresponding to the survey's elevation data points. Assign elevation values at these intersections to build the base map. Next, determine contour levels using a consistent contour interval,...

Microtubule Associated Proteins (MAPs)01:42

Microtubule Associated Proteins (MAPs)

5.8K
Microtubule function and architecture are regulated by an array of specialized proteins called microtubule-associated proteins or MAPs. These proteins are widespread across different organisms and have conserved protein motifs, like the multi-TOG domain for tubulin binding found in the CLASP family of MAPs. Some MAPs are lineage-specific based on their conserved domains. Their functions depend upon the cytoskeletal architecture and cell type they are located within. In-plant cells, a specific...

Irritable Bowel Syndrome I: Introduction01:17

Irritable Bowel Syndrome I: Introduction

949
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is characterized by functional disturbances in the gastrointestinal system, presenting a cluster of symptoms without evident structural or biochemical abnormalities. It primarily affects the large intestine and may cause abdominal pain, bloating, excessive gas, diarrhea, constipation, or both.
IBS is a chronic condition that can persist over a long period or recur frequently.
The pathogenesis of IBS involves a complex interplay of the following factors:
Altered...

Summary

Patients with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) have thin corneas but may not develop keratoconus. Advanced corneal mapping offers insights into EDS-related corneal changes.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Genetics
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a group of inherited connective tissue disorders.
  • Classic (type I) EDS is characterized by skin hyperextensibility, joint hypermobility, and tissue fragility.
  • Corneal abnormalities, including thinning and keratoconus, can occur in EDS patients.

Observation:

  • A patient with classic EDS presented with blue sclera, myopia, astigmatism, and significant limbus-to-limbus corneal thinning.
  • Orbscan pachymetry mapping detailed central corneal thickness (360µm OD, 383µm OS) and midperipheral thinning.
  • Despite corneal thinning and presumed biomechanical weakness, regular corneal topography was maintained.

Findings:

  • The study highlights a case of classic EDS with severe corneal thinning but without keratoconus.

  • Orbscan imaging effectively visualized the extent of limbus-to-limbus corneal thinning.
  • Corneal biomechanical integrity may be preserved to some extent even with significant thinning in EDS.
  • Implications:

    • Laser refractive surgery remains contraindicated in all types of EDS due to biomechanical risks.
    • Advanced corneal topography and pachymetry, like Orbscan, are valuable tools for assessing corneal structure in EDS.
    • Understanding corneal morphology in EDS is crucial for managing ocular health and surgical candidacy.
