Laparoscopic common bile duct exploration (CBDE) for gallstones is challenging but shows promise. While not widely recommended now, it may replace open surgery in the future.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery

Background:

  • Choledocholithiasis, or gallstones in the common bile duct, often requires intervention.
  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a standard treatment for gallstones.

Observation:

  • Five patients with cholelithiasis and choledocholithiasis underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy and common bile duct exploration (CBDE).
  • Three CBDE procedures were successful; two required surgical stone extraction.
  • Two formal laparoscopic CBDEs and three trans-cystic duct CBDEs were performed.

Findings:

  • Laparoscopic CBDE is technically demanding due to limited instrumentation and surgeon experience.
  • All patients recovered without surgical complications.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos
