A new gerontological nursing curriculum model was developed to meet Korean societal needs, identifying essential knowledge, attitudes, and skills for nursing graduates. This model provides a framework for specialized gerontological education.

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Nursing Education

Context:

  • Growing elderly population in Korea necessitates specialized geriatric care.
  • Existing nursing curricula may not adequately address the complexities of aging.

Purpose:

  • To develop a comprehensive gerontological nursing curriculum model tailored to Korean societal needs.
  • To establish consensus on essential gerontological nursing competencies (knowledge, attitudes, skills) for nursing graduates.

Summary:

  • A three-round Delphi survey involving gerontological nursing experts identified 32 knowledge, 29 attitude, and 21 skill items.
  • The developed curriculum model is structured around a cube with dimensions of functional capacity levels, settings, and nursing practice.
  • Specific competencies for gerontological theory and practicum courses were outlined and assigned to either theory or practice.

Related Experiment Videos

Impact:

  • Provides a foundational framework for enhancing gerontological nursing education in Korea.
  • Aims to improve the quality of care for the elderly by equipping nurses with specialized skills.
  • Highlights the need for further development and validation of the curriculum model with detailed course outlines and textbooks.
