Summary

Accommodative esotropia often presents with amblyopia, with anisometropia as a key risk factor. While many patients achieve fusion, stereopsis remains poor post-treatment for accommodative esotropia.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Pediatric Ophthalmology
  • Strabismus Management

Background:

  • Accommodative esotropia is a common form of strabismus in children.
  • Associated amblyopia and visual development are significant concerns.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To document clinical features and functional outcomes in accommodative esotropia.
  • To assess management efficacy and identify risk factors for amblyopia.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective chart review of 147 patients with accommodative esotropia.
  • Analysis of refractive error, ocular alignment, stereoacuity, and age at onset.

Main Results:

  • Anisometropia was the sole significant risk factor for amblyopia (P = .001).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Good fusion was achieved in 73.5% of patients, but stereopsis was frequently impaired.
  • Later presentation (>24 months) correlated with reduced fusional ability (P = .031).
  • Conclusions:

    • Amblyopia is a frequent comorbidity in accommodative esotropia.
    • While fusion is often restored, stereopsis remains a challenge in managing accommodative esotropia.
