Background:

Early detection of pre-clinical Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is crucial.
Reliable tests are needed to track memory decline over shorter periods.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess memory decline over one year in individuals with amnestic MCI.
To evaluate the sensitivity of the Continuous Learning Task (CLT) in detecting subtle memory changes.

Main Methods:

Administered the CogState CLT 8 times over 12 months to 15 MCI patients and 35 controls.
Compared CLT performance changes between groups and with other memory tasks.

Main Results:

MCI group showed significantly worse baseline memory performance.

The difference in CLT performance between groups increased significantly over 12 months due to MCI group decline.

Standard memory tests did not detect decline over the same period.

Conclusions:

Subtle memory decline in amnestic MCI is detectable with sensitive memory tests.
